The Short Answer

Pre-operative evaluations at 910 Park Avenue or at your door.

DoctorNYC provides pre-operative medical evaluations for elective surgery at 910 Park Avenue, or by physician house call to a Manhattan home, office, or hotel.

The visit can include a history, exam, vital signs, medication review, and, when the surgeon requests them, blood tests and an EKG.

Clearance is not guaranteed. Which tests you need depends on the treating surgeon, the surgical facility, the anesthesia plan, the procedure, and your health.

Call (917) 301-8782 for a house call, or (212) 201-0719 for an office visit.

What the Evaluation Can Include

The evaluation is performed by a physician and is shaped by the requirements your surgical team provides. Depending on those requirements, it can include:

Send your surgeon’s pre-operative instructions, clearance form or laboratory requisition before the visit whenever possible, along with your surgery date and procedure.

Blood Work and an EKG Are Not a Clearance by Themselves

Test results on their own do not complete a pre-operative evaluation. A phlebotomist-only blood draw is not a medical clearance. A clearance requires a physician to take your history, examine you, review your medications and interpret any results in the context of the planned surgery and anesthesia.

A physician evaluation is separate from a mobile lab visit. If a mobile lab service draws your blood, a physician evaluation is still needed for the clearance your surgeon has requested.

Clearance is not guaranteed. The physician’s assessment depends on your history, examination, requested testing and any findings. If something needs further evaluation, additional steps may be recommended before surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Medical clearance is a physician’s pre-operative evaluation before a planned procedure. It reviews your history, medications, examination and any requested test results to identify medical issues that could affect anesthesia, surgery or recovery, and the findings are documented for your surgical team. Clearance is not guaranteed.

Your surgeon or surgical facility sets the window in which the evaluation and any testing must be completed, and it differs between practices and procedures. Contact DoctorNYC as soon as you have your surgery date and pre-operative instructions, so there is time for results and any follow-up.

Yes. A DoctorNYC physician can perform the evaluation by house call at your Manhattan home, office or hotel, subject to physician availability and to whether the testing your surgeon requires can appropriately be completed there. Call (917) 301-8782 to arrange a house call.

An EKG can be included when your surgeon requests one. Send your surgeon’s requirements before the visit so the team can confirm whether everything requested can be done at your address or should be completed at 910 Park Avenue.

Your treating surgeon, the surgical facility and the anesthesia team set the pre-operative requirements, based on the procedure, the anesthesia plan and your health. The evaluating physician may recommend further testing if the history, examination or results call for it.

The physician explains the finding and the recommended next step, which may include additional testing, treatment or a specialist evaluation before surgery. With your authorization, the findings can be shared with your surgical team, who decide whether and when to proceed.
